- Mokume Gane 18k white gold, palladium & silver. Style #6701.
Mokume gane is an ancient Japanese technique that bonds many layers of precious metals into a single piece that is then worked into beautiful patterns. The name means "wood pattern metal". My mokume gane is fused by the traditional method, using heat and pressure. Our patterns and designs showcase the natural beauty of the material, and the quality of our rings is second to none. The rings on this page are constructed in the traditional manner Ð a piece of material is patterned while flat, and then shaped into a ring. Chris Ploof Studio is proud to also offer the only seamless mokume gane rings in the world.
- Damascus Steel Pathway pattern. Style #6710
Damascus steel is the metal of legends. Knives and swords have been forged from damascus steel for centuries. Named for the celebrated smiths of Damascus, Syria, warriors from the Vikings to the Samurai have long held swords and knives made from laminated steel in the highest esteem. My rings are as durable as these tools, but fashioned from a modern variation, Stainless Steel Damascus. Superior to the original material, because it will not corrode like other damascus steels and it is incredibly beautiful. These rings are perfect for those with the independent warrior spirit who make their own rules, and wish an enduring, durable symbol of their commitment to one another.

- Meteorite & 18k white or yellow gold. Style #6706
Chris Ploof's rings are made exclusively from pieces of the Gibeon Meteorite found in Namibia. The Gibeon flamed into our atmosphere as a visible star-like streak an estimated 30,000 years ago. The extreme slow-cooling of its trip through deep space created an original crystalline pattern into the resulting meteorite. Though "officially" discovered in the desert 1838, local craftsmen have made spear points and other tools out of the fragments for many years. The metal of the meteorite is estimated to be about four billion years old, and today it is a rare commodity. Not all Gibeon Meteorite fragments are of equal quality. For every piece of meteorite that is suitable for use in jewelry, Chris rejects nearly 20 others. Much of the meteorite has suffered deep fractures and inclusions on its travels to our planet, and many pieces have lain exposed to the elements for several thousand years. Chris uses only the best quality meteorite for making rings. Due to its nickel content, the Gibeon meteorite is naturally stain and rust resistant. The Gibeon meteorite is cut, forged and fabricated, and then combined with platinum, gold or mokume gane to form an extremely strong, durable ring with a comfort fit interior. Rings are available in many styles, and can be custom made to client specifications. Chris etches the meteorite in the final stages of creating the rings to enhance the Wiidmanstatten pattern, which is random and beautiful, original to each ring.
